The Physical Signs of Breast Cancer

Knowing what is normal for your body can help you recognize changes and seek medical care when needed. While not every breast change is a sign of cancer, certain symptoms should never be ignored.

1. A New Lump or Thickening in the Breast

One of the most common signs of breast cancer is a new lump in the breast or underarm area. A lump may feel hard, soft, thick, or different from the surrounding tissue. Not all lumps are cancerous, but any new or unusual lump should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

2. Changes in Breast Size or Shape

Although some differences between breasts are normal, a new or unexplained change in size or shape may be a warning sign.

3. Skin Changes on the Breast

Changes in the skin covering your breast can sometimes indicate breast cancer. Look for:

  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • Redness or unusual discoloration
  • Skin that looks thickened or resembles an orange peel.
  • Persistent swelling or irritation.

4. Nipple Changes or Unusual Discharge

Changes in your nipples can also signal a concern for breast health. Be aware of:

  • A nipple that newly turns inward.
  • Persistent redness, scaling, crusting, or irritation around the nipple.
  • Spontaneous nipple discharge, especially if it is bloody.
  • A new or unexplained change in nipple appearance.

5. Persistent Breast Pain or Discomfort

Breast pain is common and is often related to hormonal changes with menstrual cycles or benign breast conditions. However, persistent, localized, or unexplained pain should be evaluated, particularly when accompanied by other breast changes.

Overall, it is important to remember; breast cancer does not always cause pain. Do not wait for discomfort to develop before paying attention to other warning signs. At Trust Women’s Healthcare we offer breast examinations and mammogram referrals. Do not hesitate to schedule with us!
