STI Prevention: Protecting Your Health at Every Stage of Life

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common, but many are preventable with the right proactive measures in place. Whether you have multiple sexual partners, or in a monogamous relationship, STI prevention is key in protecting your overall health. While some infections may cause noticeable symptoms, many people have no symptoms at all, making regular screening important. Untreated infections can lead health complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, and increased risk of acquiring HIV. Here are some ways to prevent transmission of such infections:

1. Use Protection Consistently

Condoms and dental dams can significantly reduce the risk of many STIs when used correctly during every sexual encounter (yes that includes oral sex!). While they do not eliminate risk entirely, they are still highly effective. Make sure to switch out condoms as needed.

2. Get Regular STI Screenings

Routine testing is important because many STIs do not cause symptoms. Screening recommendations vary based on age, sexual activity, and individual risk factors. For asymptomatic individuals a good rule is to be screened every year, or whenever you are engaging with a new partner(s) – whichever comes first.

3. Communicate with Your Partner(s)

Open and honest conversations about sexual history, STI testing, and prevention can help both partners make informed decisions.

4. Limit Your Number of Sexual Partners

Having fewer sexual partners may reduce your exposure to STIs.

5. Having fewer sexual partners may reduce your exposure to STIs.

If you or your partner experience symptoms such as sores, unusual discharge, pain during urination, or unexplained rashes, avoid sexual contact until you have been evaluated by a provider.

Many people assume STI risk decreases with age, but sexually active adults of all ages can contract STIs. Women entering menopause should continue practicing safe sex and receiving regular screenings as recommended by their healthcare provider regardless of marital status.
