HIV Prevention: Know Your Options, Protect Your Health
At Trust Women’s Healthcare, we believe every woman deserves access to information and care that helps her make informed decisions about her sexual and reproductive health. HIV prevention is more than one strategy. Today, there are several effective tools that can help reduce the risk of HIV—including condoms, HIV testing, PrEP, and PEP.
1. Know Your HIV Status
Getting tested is one of the most important steps in protecting your health. The CDC recommends that everyone ages 13–64 get tested for HIV at least once, with more frequent testing for people with certain risk factors.
2. Consider PrEP
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medication taken by people who do not have HIV to reduce their chance of getting HIV. It is available as pills and injections, and it can be highly effective when used as prescribed. PrEP may be an option if you have a sexual partner with HIV, don’t consistently use condoms, have recently had an STI, or simply want an additional layer of HIV protection
3. Use Condoms
Condoms remain an important tool for preventing HIV and certain other STIs. Using a condom correctly and consistently during sex can significantly reduce the risk of HIV transmission. Condoms can also be used alongside PrEP for additional protection.
4. Know About PEP
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is an emergency medication that can help prevent HIV after a possible exposure. If you think you may have been exposed to HIV—for example, after a condom breaks—PEP must be started within 72 hours, and the sooner it is started, the better. Contact a healthcare provider, urgent care, or emergency department right away.
5. Don’t Forget STI Testing
STIs and HIV can be connected, and having another STI can increase the chance of getting HIV. Regular sexual health screening can help you understand your health status and get treatment when needed.
